Default How did you get started, and what did you start with?

How did you get into this business, and what was your first equipment and vehicles you used to start?

I started in this business doing air duct cleaning. I purchased the van and equipment together. My advertising was yellow pages, newspapers, post cards, and word of mouth. The money made on each job was good but could not get enough jobs so I added carpet cleaning the following year. I leased a prochem blazer from a local supplier and once my carpet cleaning picked up I stopped cleaning air ducts because I hated it.

I paid $11k for the air duct cleaning package and 11k for the carpet cleaning package. If I had to do it over again I'd make some changes. First I would not do the air duct cleaning at all.Not because it is not profitable but because I hated it.Second I would have bought a larger van. I had a GMC Safari. Also, I would never spend more than 10k on a work van. 10k can buy you a very attractive and reliable van. The money that I saved on van and equipment I would spend on marketing. Why so many of us neglect the marketing part of our businesses is beyond me.

I started doing janitorial and carpets. I had a 1971 VW bus with a diamond back portable, propane buffer, mops, buckets etc. Man that thing was packed. Got a 1994 ford in 1997 and still have it in service today. Truckmounts in order, Workmaster 300XE electric with propane heat, steamway mastermatic omega 4200, EZ2747, EZ1636, EZ1333.

I jumped right into it full steam ahead. I bought an existing business, came with a Boxxer 427 in a chevy extended van, and some decent customers. It has been a HUGE learning curve from day 3. I have made it into my 4th years and still going.

sold my 1976 Firebirds Trans am ( sniff ) and bought a 1983 Dodge Ram Van . Bought an SRK portable( a stainless steel box ) and went to work. I had already had previous experience through servicemaster , so I was pretty well trained already .

Well I had a Drywall lic.and was contracting. When I was around 20yrs my pops tried to get me out of constuction and he helped me get a cleaning biz. I met some people and they talked me into a franchise called Laser Chem it was a dry cleaning spin off of chem dry. Signed a contract with 29 Palms Marine Base for carpet Re- Dye $300,000.00 allowance Great..... Got a divorce lost it all in the D.
So when the economy took a dive I made my mind up to get out of construction had great credit and some savings so went and bought a 05 PC legend and put it all in my trailer I had from my drywall co. Spent 10,000 for ready to work set up. TM had 300 hrs on it when I got it.
It has been hard but I'm still growing even in this crapy economy, In fact I think last month was my best month to date and this month looks good too. I could not have done it without the help of my Wife of 13 yrs, Melissa she took on two jobs just to help us survive. She has quit the 2nd job now for about 3 months now, We are going to go out now that the weather is better and do door hangers in the evenings to see if we can keep building or custy base and have fun doin that together.

I just started carpet cleaning 10/4/10. I had my first job yesterday! I purchased a Rug Doctor Pro because they had an easy payment plan. I see from reading the post I must get better equipment and I am going to get certification through ICCR. I am excited about the future, I have nothing to invest but time and my Rug Doctor. My goal is to make enough money before the year 2010 is out to purchase a Rotovac Starter Kit, it sounds like a really good system and it's $3,000.00.

Come on you guys. It is quite obvious what you are doing. Stop trying to be like Mikey.

Oh, by the way ... I started off with a Castex portable and a POS Castex wand. Still got the wand.
